Update your feeds!

I think I'm going to move this blog over to http://andyspear.tumblr.com/ Tumblr seems to be a little more effective for what I'm looking to do with this, and after 255 posts on here, I think it has run its course. I'll leave you with a portrait I shot in Bruce Gilden's scholarship workshop last week in Charlottesville, VA. Thanks for everyone who has paid attention to this over the years!

All the best,
Andy Spear

Stefan Ustorf for Der Spiegel

I got a call from German newsweekly Der Spiegel a few weeks ago to head out and photograph Stefan Ustorf, a German, former US hockey player. He currently plays on a team in Berlin, but due to the head trauma that comes with years of playing hockey, might not be able to play any longer without suffering permanent damage. He's currently trying to get regulations changed.

They wanted a sensitive portrait- obviously I didn't make the peak action image up top, but was able to come away with something that fit the bill in the short period of time I spent with Stefan.

Breen Energy for Bloomberg Businessweek

A few weeks ago I spent a morning in Carnegie, PA, just south of Pittsburgh, working with Cal Lockert of Breen Energy Solutions. Breen, which has an office near a small workshop, and then a factory space in a former steel mill just down the street, offers solutions to the acidic waste that is the byproduct of coal burning power plants. Essentially, they add calcium compounds to neutralize the waste.

The former steel mill was an interesting building- numerous businesses have space in it, and each company's "section" is marked off by chalk on the ground.
